Understanding Ear Infections

As a pet professional, I have gotten all sorts of pet parents who have come in and have had so many issues with ear infections.

Although I am not a veterinarian, after grooming so many pets, I kind of have a better understanding than your average human about how they happen, just based on the feedback and information we get from veterinarians by proximity.

Often times there is a lot of misunderstanding about ear infections and our responsibilities for them as pet grooming professionals. The prevention starts at home, and as pet professionals we should try to help people understand why and how to prevent this going forward.

Below is an account of the most common causes for ear infections in dogs, taken from the AAHA Acredited resource:

"Common Causes of Ear Infections in Dogs

Ear infections in dogs can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Bacteria and Yeast: These organisms thrive in warm, moist environments like a dog’s ear canal. An imbalance in the ear’s natural flora can contribute to infections, particularly in breeds with floppy ears that retain moisture.
  • Ear Mites: These parasites are especially common in puppies and can cause severe irritation, leading to scratching and secondary infections.
  • Allergies: Allergic reactions to food or environmental factors can lead to inflammation and infections. Dogs with recurrent ear infections often suffer from underlying allergies that need long-term management.
  • External Factors: Activities such as swimming can lead to water trapped in the ear, while excessive cleaning can irritate the ear canal. It’s essential to dry your dog’s ears thoroughly after swimming to prevent moisture buildup.

Understanding these causes can help prevent ear infections by addressing the root issues. Regular veterinary check-ups can help identify these underlying causes and tailor a preventative approach for each pet.

Measures to Protect Your Dog

Preventing ear infections is more effective than treating them. Consider these preventative measures:

  1. Regular Ear Checks and Cleaning: Learn how to safely clean your dog’s ears to remove debris and moisture. Avoid over-cleaning, as this can strip the ear canal of natural oils that protect against infection.
  2. Appropriate Ear Cleaning Products: Choose vet-recommended products to maintain ear hygiene. Avoid harsh or alcohol-based products that can irritate the sensitive ear tissue.
  3. Diet and Health: Maintain a balanced diet to support your dog’s immune system. Allergies often contribute to ear infections, so discussing dietary options with your vet can be beneficial. For more information, visit our Nutrition Services page

Treating Ear Infections at Home

For mild infections, home treatment can be effective:

  1. Ear Cleaning: Use a veterinarian-approved ear cleaner. Gently massage the base of the ear to distribute the cleaner, then allow your dog to shake out the excess fluid.
  2. Medications: Apply over-the-counter ear drops if recommended by your vet. These may include antifungal or antibacterial solutions to target specific pathogens.
  3. Monitor Progress: Keep an eye on the condition of your dog’s ears. If symptoms persist, schedule an appointment with us. Persistent symptoms may indicate a more severe infection requiring prescription medication.
  • How often should I clean my dog’s ears? Generally, cleaning once a week is sufficient, but consult your vet for specific advice tailored to your pet’s needs.
  • What are the signs that an infection is worsening? Signs include increased redness, swelling, pain, or a foul odor. If your dog shows signs of hearing loss or behavioral changes, seek veterinary attention immediately.
  • How can I tell if my dog is in pain from an ear infection? Dogs in pain may whine, paw at their ears, or become less active. They might also become more irritable or sensitive to touch around their head."

Hopefully this can help people in the future to avoid having ear infections! Knowledge is power.
